Curriculum Focus

Our Montessori lower elementary curriculum integrates bilingual instruction, language arts, mathematics, cultural studies, physical science, life sciences, and cosmic education. In a calm, Montessori-inspired learning environment, your child will develop skills in abstract thinking, writing, problem-solving, research, time management, and collaboration. The lower elementary curriculum builds on early childhood foundations while preparing your child for upper elementary and future academic expectations.

Daily Routine

Each school day includes an uninterrupted morning work cycle, language lessons, individual and small-group lessons, cosmic education stories, practical life extensions, outdoor physical education, reading and writing workshops, and project-based learning. Students participate in extended work periods that support intrinsic motivation, focus, and joyful learning across our lower elementary curriculum.

Classroom Experience

In our lower elementary classrooms, students engage in a respectful, vibrant learning community where our Montessori-trained guides guide children through individualized lessons while encouraging independence and creative thinking. The environment mirrors the principles of the Montessori approach, which includes freedom within limits, responsibility for work plans, and opportunities for self-discovery, creating a space where your child is supported, inspired, and known.

About Our Montessori Lower Elementary Program

Lower elementary is a transformative stage when children begin to ask big questions, develop moral reasoning, and shift from concrete to abstract thinking. At International Montessori Academy, we honor this developmental period through a Montessori elementary curriculum grounded in cosmic education, language arts literacy, naths, science, and hands-on discovery. Research shows that elementary students thrive when they have uninterrupted time to work, opportunities to collaborate, and access to learning materials that make abstract concepts concrete. Our lower elementary program meets the social, emotional, and academic needs of lower elementary children through a learning environment that fosters ownership, curiosity, and confidence.

From Ages 6 to 8: How Our Lower Elementary Program Supports Your Child's Growth

Children ages 6-8 enter a new plane of development, one defined by imagination, social connection, fairness, increased reasoning, and a desire for independence. Our Montessori lower elementary curriculum is specifically designed for this stage, offering a rich blend of academic rigor, emotional development, and hands-on exploration.

Practical Life Skills for Organization & Responsibility

Practical life extends into community responsibilities, managing work plans, collaborating on projects, caring for classroom plants, preparing snacks, and practicing social grace. These daily routines strengthen executive functioning, independence, and self-management. Research also supports the idea that real-world responsibility promotes cognitive growth.

Sensorial Foundations for Abstract Thinking

While young children worked with sensorial materials to refine perception, lower elementary students use these experiences to transition to abstract concepts in math, geometry, art, and scientific classification. This kind of sensorial learning enhances memory, reasoning, and flexible thinking, essential skills as children begin exploring more advanced academic topics.

Language Arts for Research, Writing & Communication

In our lower elementary classroom, the language arts curriculum expands into structured writing, grammar symbols, research projects, story analysis, and language fluency. Our belief is that children learn language best through integrated reading, writing, and cultural experiences.

Lower Elementary Math Curriculum for Logic & Problem Solving

Students explore math deeply using Montessori materials such as the Stamp Game, Fraction Insets, and Golden Beads to understand the decimal system, operations, fractions, measurement, and geometry. These hands-on materials allow children to see why math works before transitioning to abstract notation, reflecting our research-supported Montessori math approach.

Cultural Studies & Cosmic Education for Global Understanding

Through cosmic education, children explore geography, life sciences, physical science, geology, history, and anthropology using stories known as the Great Lessons. These lessons deepen cultural understanding and encourage children to ask big questions about the universe, humanity, and their role in the world, essential for building compassion and global awareness.
